J.J. Abrams has informed Sci Fi Wire that year's Lost season-ending cliffhanger will be even more powerful than last year's.

The Mission: Impossible III director said that Damon Lindelof, his co-creator for the series, has an ending that surprised even him. "I can tell you that Damon Lindelof has done just that ... The ending of this year in Lost blows the ending of last season out of the water. It's an incredible finale. You'll see what happens, but I can tell you that a lot of it has been there and been building from the beginning of this season. It's not out of the blue, but what happens at the very end of this year, for me, it's the greatest finale I have ever heard."

Now that Abrams has finished the Tom Cruise action movie, he says he looks forward to going back to Lost and ultimately would like to do both television and films. He is rumored to be attached to an 11th Star Trek film which is in the pre-development stage.

The Lost season finale, Live Together, Die Alone, will air May 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. An ABC press release describes the finale: After discovering something odd just offshore, Jack and Sayid come up with a plan to confront "The Others" and hopefully get Walt back. Meanwhile, Eko and Locke come to blows as Locke makes a potentially cataclysmic decision regarding the "button" and the hatch.
