Of all the roles J.K. Simmons has taken on over the years, there hasn't been any sweeter than voicing the yellow M&M. Starting in the 1990s, Simmons has been serving as the voice of the animated candy-coated chocolate treat in various television commercials and radio spots. He's since been impressing critics with his live-action performances, which includes winning an Oscar for Whiplash, but he's still the voice of the yellow M&M.

Recently, Simmons came onto the podcast 10 Questions with Kyle Brandt. During the conversation, Simmons was asked about the M&M gig, clarifying why he says it's the "sweetest" gig he's ever had. At the time, when the offer to voice the popular candy came along, Simmons hadn't yet "made it" as an actor, at least not financially, as he was still struggling with money. M&M changed everything when Simmons got that job, as he's been financially stable ever since, allowing him to decline other roles that come along if they're not right for him.

“The M&M gig came along and quickly became that stable thing that allowed me the freedom and kind of the weight off the shoulders as I’m getting married, buying a house, contemplating fatherhood…it gave me the freedom, peace of mind and the ability once the kids came along to say no to a job that was going to take me away from my family for eight weeks.”

J.K. Simmons first started voicing the yellow M&M in 1996, taking over the role from John Goodman. Very soon after, another wonderful opportunity for him came along when he was offered the role of sadistic inmate Vernon Schillinger in the gritty HBO prison drama Oz. As a villain fans loved to hate, Simmons really showed off his versatility in that role, and the roller coaster just kept going from there. In 2002, he appeared as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man to take one of his most recognizable roles to date, appearing in all three installments of that trilogy and recently reprising that role for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His acclaimed role in Whiplash is another big one for Jameson. In his 10 Questions with Kyle Brandt interview, Simmons addressed that role as well and how much fun it was to be "slapping the crap out of Miles Teller." Simmons won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that role, and of his acceptance speech, the actor noted, "I did decide early on that if I were fortunate enough to be standing on stage there at the Oscars that I wanted to talk about the most important thing in life. I knew what I wanted to say and I knew that I wanted to give love to my wife and our kids and my parents. It’s probably the one time in my life that I’ll be talking and that many people will be listening and I’m really glad that’s what I said.”

J.K. Simmons still occasionally voices the yellow M&M for various ads, but he's much more established as a movie actor at this point in his career. In fact, he has two separate movies coming out this month alone. First, fans can see him as William Frawley in Aaron Sorkin's I Love Lucy-based drama Being the Ricardos alongside Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, which is releasing on Dec. 10. The next week, Simmons will return as J. Jonah Jameson in the new superhero epic Spider-Man: No Way Home, which must be the most anticipated movie of the year. This news comes to us from 10 Questions with Kyle Brandt.
