The Great Gatsby's Joel Edgerton has inked a deal to join Johnny Depp in Barry Levinson's upcoming drama Black Mass.

The film tells the true story of Boston crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger, who was the brother of Massachusetts state senator William M. Bulger. The gangster became a FBI informant in a plot to take down a rival Mafia family. In return, the Feds double crossed the infamous criminal and ended up prosecuting him as well.

Johnny Depp will be portraying James 'Whitey' Bulger with Joel Edgerton taking on the role of FBI agent John Connolly, who was childhood friend of the crime boss.

Barry Levinson is directing with Brian Oliver, Tyler Thompson, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust, John Lesher and Christi Dembrowski producing.
