Thor: Love and Thunder’s first teaser trailer finally arrived earlier this week, and instantly gained over 200 million views, becoming the fourth highest viewed trailer in its first 24 hour period. While some would think this is down to the popularity of the Marvel franchise, combined with the lengthy wait fans have had to see the first footage of Thor’s return, Peacemaker’s John Cena has a different idea and director James Gunn has agreed.

Following the reveal that the teaser for Thor had become a huge crowd pleaser, John Cena couldn’t resist pointing out a little bit of a similarity between Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor helmet and the one he wears as Peacemaker. Of course this could only mean one thing – the power of the chrome helmet is the root of Thor’s trailer success. This was something that Peacemaker director James Gunn was happy to jump on board with.

Cena said on Twitter, “This might just be because of that slick looking chrome helmet and maybe enthusiasts getting excited for a @Marvel @DCComics crossover chrome helmet showdown??”

James Gunn replied to Cena saying, “True, true. Very observant, John.”

Although the comments are clearly a bit of witty banter among the comic book movie “rivals”, there is a strange bit of truth in Cena’s jibing. One of the biggest moments in the trailer was the first footage revealed of Natalie Portman in her Mighty Thor costume, chrome dome and all. While some also hoped to get a glimpse of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, there is no doubt that Portman’s return to the franchise was still what many wanted to see.

Marvel Studios

There have been a number of rumors about how Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will become the Mighty Thor, and new merchandise has now confirmed that the storyline of Thor: Love and Thunder will see the film follow the comic books in revealing that Jane is dying of cancer when she is given her new powers. In a listing for an official replica of the Mighty Thor’s helmet, the description includes the plot point, “Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever. Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!”

The description also added some more details to how the Mighty Thor’s path will direct link to that of Gorr, and it sounds like Jane’s newly created superhero, along with Thor, Valkyrie and the Guardians of the Galaxy will have their hands full in trying to stop the terrifying new MCU villain from carrying out his destructive plans to rid the universe of gods.

Thor: Love and Thunder will bring Chris Hemsworth’s Norse hero back into theaters on July 8.
