Kevin Smith announced today that actor John Goodman has joined the cast of his upcoming horror film Red State, which began shooting in and around the Los Angeles area this week. The news was announced on actor Ralph Garman's Babble-On podcast, where Kevin Smith proclaimed himself to be a longtime fan of John Goodman's work.

The plot of the movie, which Kevin Smith wrote, follows a group of teenagers who encounter a terrifying fundamentalist preacher based on the real life Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church. This will be Smith's first attempt at making a horror film, as the director is most widely known for his raunchy comedies.

No details were given on John Goodman's character as of yet, though Kevin Smith did say the chance to work with the actor was "a dream come true." He also mentioned that he has written a part for Goodman in his latest screenplay entitled Hit Somebody, which revolves around the lives of a small town hockey team.
