The story of Hollywood’s most tumultuous relationship will be told in the upcoming documentary Johnny vs Amber. Chronicling the short-lived marriage between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the two-part documentary is in development for the streaming service Discovery+. It is being produced as a “double bill” by Optomen, with each of the two parts told from one of their perspectives.

Johnny vs Amber will feature interviews with the lawyers of both Depp and Heard, each presenting their sides of the case, which stems from allegations made by Heard that Johnny Depp had been physically abusive. Testimony from others close to both actors will also be included. The doc will also make use of extensive footage and audio recordings that had been recorded by both Depp and Heard at different points.

“The series provides an in-depth insight into the epic battle that powered #JusticeforJohnnyDepp and #IStandWithYouAmberHeard fan campaigns and the very public High Court case that gripped us all. Optomen has done a fantastic job turning this multi-layered story into something both engrossing and horrifying,” said Clare Laycock, senior VP for planning and insights and head of entertainment at Discovery, in a statement.

“The story of what happened between Johnny and Amber continues to be hugely divisive, between fans and the public at large,” stated Charlotte Reid, VP commissioning for entertainment at Discovery. “We set out to make a documentary that would explore the story from each of their perspectives, so the viewer can go beyond the headlines, understand who they are, and decide who they should believe in this complex human story. We think it’s a compellingly contemporary story on truth and lies that we hope will open up a conversation with our viewers on Discovery+.”

“Through the tapes, home videos and text messages shown in court, these films give viewers a rare and important insight into a marriage that went tragically wrong, and to better understand the hugely important issue of domestic violence,” adds Nick Hornby, co-CEO at Optomen.

After meeting on the set of The Rum Diary and getting married in 2015, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were divorced just two years later. In 2018, Heard alleged that she was a victim of domestic violence, and it was announced soon after Depp was no longer involved with the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Though he had already filmed some scenes for Fantastic Beasts 3, Depp later also resigned from that role at the request of the studio.

Depp would also lose a defamation lawsuit against a UK tabloid for calling him a “wife beater” in an article, though he has a separate lawsuit against Heard set to be heard in 2022. The actor’s fans believe the evidence shows him to be innocent of the allegations and even a victim of domestic violence himself. This has brought forth petitions for Amber Heard to lose her job as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with others demanding Johnny get his roles back in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises.

Johnny vs Amber has not been given an official release date, but the documentary will be streaming exclusively on Discovery+ in 2022. This news comes to us from Variety.
