Joaquin Phoenix says that the Joker Origin Movie "sounds interesting," with a smile when asked about his involvement. The actor previously dodged questions about the DC Films project, claiming that he didn't know about it at all, but noted that it sounded "amazing." Phoenix's name has been attached to the project since late last year when reports began to circulate that he was the studio's frontrunner after Leonardo DiCaprio had previously been rumored to play the Clown Prince of Crime.

In a new interview with Fandango, Joaquin Phoenix seemed more open to the idea of playing the Joker in the Martin Scorsese produced film than ever before. While asked about the role, Phoenix reportedly had a "mischievous grin" on his face before saying that he didn't know. The role sounded "amazing" a few months ago and now the character seems "interesting." Phoenix had this to say.

"I don't know... it could be an interesting character, I don't know."

Joaquin Phoenix also talked about his perceived dislike of superhero and comic book movies in the rest of the interview. When it comes down to it, Phoenix isn't concerned with a genre. Instead, he's into the story, the character, and the director, which makes complete sense. The actor even spoke about his flirtations with the superhero genre over the last handful of years and maintains that it has nothing to do with a certain type of genre. He explains.

"I see it as any other movie. I wouldn't say I won't do Westerns. It depends on what it is. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that's what you want to do. So I wouldn't say, hands down, no - I wouldn't do that kind of movie. There are things where I've flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be... something that's actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that's key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn't f**king work. I'm not opposed to it. I don't make decisions on budget or things like that - it's really the filmmaker and the character."

A Joker origin story with Todd Phillips at the helm and Martin Scorsese producing does sound pretty interesting, and might work out for Joaquin Phoenix. The actor has been approached by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU over the years, but he has passed up the roles and claims that he has no regrets. We'll just have to wait and see if the Joker origin movie is the right fit for Phoenix, but on paper, it certainly seems like a role that he could bring something new to and make his own.

Joaquin Phoenix doesn't seem like the type of actor who jumps on roles. Instead, it seems that he takes his time and thinks about the character and who he's entering into a working relationship with. So, although it remains a mystery, it sure looks like Phoenix is thinking about jumping on board the Joker origin movie. You can check out the rest of the interview with Joaquin Phoenix at Fandango.
