Ever since the premiere of Get Out in 2017, Jordan Peele has earned a big name in the world of horror. On Sunday, Peele and Universal have finally dropped the first trailer for his third directed project, simply titled Nope. The trailer is available below.

Much like both of his last two projects, Get Out and Us, Peele is making sure to not reveal too much about the plot of this movie. Though this trailer is sure to give just enough pieces for fans to try and put together. The trailer opens up with the infamous The Horse in Motion, a groundbreaking set of photographs by Eadweard Muybridge. We’re introduced to a young woman, played by Keke Palmer, who is the descendant of the jockey in the photos and the owner of the Haywood Ranch. The ranch holds and trains horses for Hollywood projects, boasting to bet the only black-owned ranch in the area. Things seem to be moving just fine, but as the sun sets things get a little tense…

We’re never given a clear picture of what’s coming, but there are quite a few hints in the trailer. The first thing we notice is that whatever is out there, it’s making the horses nervous. We see one horse panic and start running in the trailer. We then see multiple characters look toward the sky, along with shots of alien related imagery such as a booth of plush dolls, and even a shot of something in the sky. We also see a peculiar shot involving a horse in, of all things, a glass box? Perhaps this is a clue that the invaders could be attracted to the large animals?

The editing gets a little fast later on, we get quick cuts of old footage, a crab in a miniature house, a mysterious dripping hand, and some kind of large domed head obscured by a horse stall. As things pick up, we see how bad of a threat the visitors are. In probably the climax of the movie, Daniel Kaluuya is riding a horse down the road to the ranch and being chased by a very ominous shadow. This is followed by shots of dust storms rolling in, one character gets lifted off the ground and thrown into the sky! What a rush! In two minutes we get so much, but at the same time so little, which is exactly what a good trailer brings to an audience.

With the direction, Nope is sure to stand out against Peele’s previous works. We got social commentary and mind control horror in Get Out, doppelganger thriller horror in Us, and even a dabble in supernatural slasher in Candyman, of which Peele was one of the writers and producers. Soon, audiences will be able to see how much fun we can have when he dabbles in aliens!

Nope is written and directed by Jordan Peele. The film stars Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee, Scream), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther), Michael Wincott (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Crow), Brandon Perea (Doom Patrol), and Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria). Keep an eye on the skies, as the film is set to release in July 22, 2022.
