Josh Ruben is an alum of CollegeHumor who has since taken to writing and/or directing his own films. His directorial debut was the Shudder original Scare Me, which Ruben also starred in alongside Aya Cash. Recently, Ruben sat down with Into the Void at Fangoria to discuss a wide range of topics, such as Ruben’s interest in making a new Darkman movie.

“Correct, and I’m here to tell you my plan is to sell a thrilling superhero horror movie with heart to Universal Pictures and hoodwink them all – remaking Bergman Island, but with [Liam] Neeson returning as Westlake and [Frances] McDormand back as Julie Hastings. It’ll be positively career-ruining.”

Recently, Neeson has expressed an interest in reading a script for a new Darkman movie. When asked if the planets were aligning, Ruben responded by saying that Neeson is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to practical jokes. And that Neeson was trying to get him back for spilling grapefruit on him at the Golden Globes and, imitating Bryan Mills, saying, I want you to listen very carefully. I have a very specific set of SPILLS.Ruben added that he was not afraid of getting punched by Neeson after doing that.

“Oh, yeah, I don’t want to say something uncouth, but no one’s gonna read this. Most people think I’m knock-kneed, but no – I was born bowlegged… It’s all Liam, dude. But I don’t hold it against him. The grape juice thing was my version of playground flirting. It just went--I dunno, a little eschew."

Ruben touched on his career on the other projects he's working on. This includes producing and a lot of writing with different fun films currently in gestation. Meanwhile, Ruben is also set to play a serial killer in a separate project for Travis Stevens (Girl on the Third Floor).

“I’m juggling a lot. Hell, some might say I have a problem. I just produced our buddy Noah Segan’s directorial debut, rewrote a slasher I’m dying to direct, wrote a vicious ‘lil thriller my fiance Lauren Sick is directing, knocked out a fifth draft of a Scare Me spin-off, and perhaps the most fun thing on my plate, co-writing something very funny, scary and kinda sweet with Freaky writer, Michael Kennedy. Monday, I leave for Whittier, Alaska, to act in a supernatural indie. Most pressing, though, I gotta figure out what the #!@$*!! to wear to the Tribeca premiere of A Wounded Fawn. Shout out to Travis Stevens for casting me as a charming serial killer. Wonder where he got that idea….”

Ruben and the Void also discussed his new movie, Werewolves Within. It was a smash hit with the horror community, the lycanthrope enthusiasts, and videogame enthusiasts. Besides that, Ruben also listed all the werewolf material for adults he read before helming the movie.

“Several titles. The first one was R. Cargert Robill’s Howlch; the second was three volumes from nine Hairy Styles werewolf fan fiction comics... Also, Steven Korng’s Fill Moon: Cycle Ungh the Werewolf and like four more, but I can’t remember because I’m retired. I directed Werewolves Within, the best-rated video game movie of all time.”

While briefly returning to the topic of Werewolves Within, the Void mentioned that it’d been nominated at this year’s Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, an award ceremony Ruben will be a presenter at. While that might seem to be a massive conflict of interest, Ruben revealed that he’d done other unethical things to secure a win too. Like loading his resume and some Scare Me DVDs into the car of Radio Silence. Ruben very much wants to be in one of their Scream installments, or at least be a PA.

Other topics were discussed as well, such as Ruben’s horror recommendations. He said to look out for Halina Reijin’s Bodies Bodies Bodies and the horror-comedy Deadstream in terms of movies. He liked the latter so much that he’s already pitched a sequel. In terms of television shows, Ruben recommends From with Harold Perrineau. And how, according to the word on the street, director Tom Hooper has put a hit out on Ruben. The information in this article comes courtesy of Fangoria.
