Julia Garner is an actress who has soared in popularity and is very quickly becoming one of the most in-demand young actresses today. The story follows a drifter named Sammy Barlach (Jake Weary) who is looking for companionship in southeast USA. Julia Garner plays Jamalee, whom Sammy meets alongside Jason Meridew (Nick Roux), both of whom offer him shelter and food. Things quickly start to go south as Sammy becomes caught up in their way of life and finds himself unable to escape. Garner gives a very convincing performance, and it’s quite unlike anything else in her filmography.

The Assistant was released in 2019 was directed by Kitty Green. The story follows Jane (Garner), a recent college graduate and aspiring film producer who has landed a dream job as an assistant to a big figure in the entertainment industry. During her time at work, she becomes increasingly aware of the abuse that takes place on a day-to-day basis in the industry, and decides to take a stand against it. The events take place over a single day, and it’s a strong performance that portrays only a slice of the harassment women face in the industry today.

Maniac was released to Netflix in 2018 and was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The miniseries featured Jonah Hill and Emma Stone in leading roles and was a critical success. The story involves the tale of two strangers who meet each other through a series of orchestrated experiments and must find their way out of their situation together. Stone plays Annie, one of the participants in the trail, and Garner portrays her younger sister. The two share several emotional moments, which further the plot and add layers to the story, all helped by Garner’s strong performance.

6 I Believe in Unicorns

I Believe in Unicorns was released in 2014 and was directed by Leah Meyerhoff. It’s a hard-hitting film surrounding Davina (Natalia Dyer) and Sterling (Peter Vack) and how their young romance quickly turns volatile and dark. Garner plays Davina’s close friend, Cassidy, who is looking out for her throughout the ordeal. She brings a warm and caring nature to a film, which is largely dark, providing some relief for the audience.

The Americans is a period spy drama created by Joe Weisberg for FX. The story is set during the Cold War. It follows Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Phillip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) who are two soviet KGB intelligence officers, posing as an American married couple in Virginia. It’s a gripping series that ran from 2013-2018 and was massively successful. Julia Garner had a recurring role in the series as Kimberly Breland, who is the daughter of CIA Afghan group head Isaac Breland and the unsuspecting asset of KGB agent Philip Jennings as "James."

4 Modern Love

Garner also excelled in the Amazon original series, Modern Love which was developed by John Carney. The series has been running for two seasons and explores different concepts of love including romantic, platonic or familial love, following different story lines from the perspectives of several characters.
