The action is about to jump from the jungle to your living room, as Sony has announced Jumanji: The Video Game, which is coming to console and PC this fall. Jumanji has become something of an unlikely franchise, thanks to the success of 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. With a sequel coming down the pipeline later this year, Sony is looking to capitalize as much as possible. As such, they have a new multiplayer video game heading our way and we've got a trailer to prove it.
It's very much just a video game teaser, but it gives us some sense of what to expect. We see the four main characters we were introduced to in the previous movie all falling from the sky and being dropped into a familiar jungle landscape. Epic music cues up and the title flashes across the screen. One of the biggest takeaways is just how much the design aesthetic mirrors that of Fortnite. Though, given that game's explosive popularity, that's not altogether surprising. Unfortunately, we don't see any gameplay but it's quite possible we could see more on that front at this year's E3, which kicks off next week.
Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe and Outright Games have partnered with Sony Pictures to bring Jumanji: The Video Game to life. Funsolve, the U.K. based gaming studio, serves as the developer. The action/adventure game will allow for online or local split-screen play with up to four players, who can play as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Moose Finbar or Professor Shelly Oberon, much like the movie. Funsolve founder and director Richard Tawn had this to say in a statement.
"This is a dream come true for our studio. Adapting the exotic, dangerous and hilarious world of Jumanji into a video game has pushed us to create something truly special."
In Jumanji: The Video Game, you and up to three teammates will be tasked with recovering the Jewels in order to save Jumanji. Players also have the option to play with AI companions. Players will face down an army of evil marauders and deadly beasts, as well as traps to dodge, with customizations to unlock. Each of the four playable characters will have unique abilities. The game will be available on the Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.
Sony will release the game on November 15. The timing isn't at all coincidental, as Jumanji 3, which recently wrapped filming, is set to hit theaters just shy of a month later on December 13. The core stars including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan will all be reprising their roles in the still-untitled follow-up. In addition to the trailer, the studio has revealed some early box art, as well as some still images that show off a bit of what to expect from the gameplay, which we've included below. Be sure to check out the trailer from the Outright Games YouTube channel below.
