Jurassic Park is, hands down, one of the most popular franchises in the history of cinema. With its movies, TV shows, and many other productions that have been released over the last 30 years, the franchise has built a huge fan base spanning all ages that continues to grow to this day. This film franchise kicked off in 1993 with the premiere of Jurassic Park, a movie directed by Steven Spielberg that, at the time, became the highest-grossing film ever. This production, that introduced a theme park of cloned dinosaurs set up by a multi-millionaire, was based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name. Jurassic Park was highly innovative in terms of technology and special effects, and won, among many, many other awards, three Oscars for Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.

The film became the first installment of a trilogy that wrapped up in 2001, and, 14 years later, came the premiere of the franchise's second trilogy, Jurassic World. The latest film released so far is 2022's Jurassic World: Dominion, but new films are not ruled out in the future (per TOR). Apart from the two trilogies, over the years the franchise has also released TV series, short films, video games, and even comic books inspired by the characters and their adventures. One of its most famous TV productions to date was Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, a Netflix animated show that aired for five seasons. Still, the franchise's forte are definitely its movies, all of which earned phenomenal profits at the box office. A scene from the Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World Jurassic Park
Universal Pictures

Due to the overwhelming success of Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton set to work on a sequel to his novel called The Lost World. The Lost World: Jurassic Park is set four years after all the events of the first film, and, once again, features John Hammond who, thwarted by the failure of his park on Isla Nublar, sends chaotician Ian Malcolm along with a team to Isla Sorna, to study the dinosaurs that are left behind and explore the possibility of opening another park to save InGen from bankruptcy.

In this production, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Joseph Mazzello, and Ariana Richards reprise their roles from the first movie, alongside Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Arliss Howard, Vince Vaughn, and Vanessa Lee Chester. The Lost World: Jurassic Park was one of the most eagerly awaited films of 1997, but unfortunately did not live up to its predecessor in terms of popularity. 3 Jurassic Park — $1.1B

Jurassic Park
Universal Pictures

Back in 1990, and before Crichton's novel Jurassic Park was even published, several studios competed for the rights to make it into a movie. Eventually, the writer accepted Spielberg and Universal Studios' offer, who also offered him to take part in the film as screenwriter. And so, 1993 saw the release of one of the greatest movie classics of all time: Jurassic Park. This science fiction film stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, B.D. Wong, Joseph Mazzello, Ariana Richards, and Samuel L. Jackson, among other actors, and it also marked the beginning of the franchise's first trilogy.

Jurassic Park introduces John Hammond, a multimillionaire businessman, who realizes his lifelong dream: to build a theme park populated by de-extinct dinosaurs. Prior to its opening on Isla Nublar, Hammond invites scientists, investors, and his own grandchildren to the park to prove that it is completely risk-free and get the safety certification needed to open. But a boycott by an internal employee leads to the failure of all safety systems, exposing this group of visitors to the dinosaurs as a severe storm hits the island. The dinosaurs featured in the film were created using a combination of CGI and life-size animatronic figures, something that brought great acclaim to the production. Considering revenues from the film's initial release in 1993, and the re-release in 3D in 2013, Jurassic Park grossed $1.1 billion worldwide.
