Netflix has announced they will be developing an all-new animated series based on Jurassic World, and it will be produced by Dreamworks Animation. Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, Colin Trevorrow, Scott Kreamer, and Lane Lueras will be executive producing. Kreamer and Lueras, who also worked on Kung Fu Panda and Pinky Malinky, will also be serving as showrunners. Called Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, the cartoon will be set during the events of Jurassic World in 2015. It will follow six teenagers who've been stranded on Isla Nublar once the dinosaurs break free and assume control of the island, and survival will require working together. The show is set to drop on Netflix sometime next year.

This juggernaut franchise first began in 1993 with the release of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. Based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, the movie tells the story of a wildlife park built by a billionaire where scientists brought to life long-extinct dinosaurs. Groundbreaking CGI and impressive animatronics made the prehistoric beasts look absolutely incredible, and the imagery still holds up to this day. The movie topped $914 million at the box office, prompting two sequels to be made in 1997 and 2001 before the franchise went dormant.

Fast forward to 2015, and the series is reborn as Jurassic World. Like the original movie, the sequel is set on Isla Nublar where the original Jurassic Park was located. The new park has been restored and has been fully functional for several years, but things inevitably go wrong when the dinosaurs start rampaging across the island once again. The movie would become one of the highest-grossing box office blockbusters of all time, taking in over $1.6 billion in ticket sales. The 2018 sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also did tremendously well by making over $1.3 billion. You probably won't find this as a surprise, but another Jurassic World sequel is already in the works as well, set for a 2021 release date.

While the Jurassic Park franchise hasn't yet had a fully-fledged cartoon series on the small screen, it has been given the Lego treatment. The five-part webseriesLego Jurassic World: The Indominous Escape was released on YouTube, described as a Jurassic World prequel with Lego-style animation. Multiple Lego short films would follow in the years after, and the company has also announced plans to produce a 13-episode Lego Jurassic World animated series. Toy sets will also be produced in conjunction with the series. As of now, however, it's not clear where the planned series will air or when we can expect to see it debut.

Considering the popularity of the franchise, it's a little strange there has never been an all-out animated series based on the movies until now. Given the involvement of Dreamworks and a good home on Netflix, the potential is there for the cartoon show to be awesome in its own right.
