Audiences were first introduced to the world of dinosaurs and all the terror that comes with them in 1993 with Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. The film took fans on a journey to the lost world as we followed paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), who ventures to a Central American island filled with cloned dinosaurs. After the ferocious creatures escape the confines of the designated park, Grant does everything he can to protect two kids and save his own skin.

Since the initial release of Jurassic Park, the franchise has seen five more entries, with the reboot, Jurassic World, releasing in 2015. Despite six total films, Jurassic has remained family and blockbuster friendly, with a PG-13 rating in each movie. The dinosaurs can be terrifying in each film; however, the true terror that comes with the blood and gore from an attack hasn't been properly displayed on the big screen. While director Colin Trevorrow promoted the extended edition of Jurassic World Dominion, Collider broached the topic of an R-rated Jurassic movie. The filmmaker said dealing with the horrified children would be difficult, but he's leaving the door open to filmmakers' future interpretations.

"It's hard to answer that question. I don't know. I do know that if we made A Quiet Place, if we made a hard R really scary version, potentially very contained, I know I'd want to see that movie. If a parent took their kid to that movie and horrified them for life, I know that would be a problem. Look, I don't want to put any cuffs on whoever has a vision for this in the future. All I know is that people love dinosaurs, people love movies with dinosaurs in them, and I know people love the world that Michael Crichton created. The reason why there are dinosaurs and humans in the same place, that sci-fi idea, it's a brilliant idea. From there, I feel like someone else should come to us."

An R-Rated Jurassic Film Could be What the Franchise Needs

After six entries in the Jurassic universe, fans are hoping for a massive shakeup with the franchise. Jurassic World Dominion was released in June earlier this year, and the reviews were far from spectacular. Dominion brought back several original cast members, including Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, however, the nostalgia wasn't enough to completely reinvigorate the franchise.

An R-rated Jurassic movie that depicts the horrifying reality of Dinosaurs and humans sharing a world could be just what the movies need. Now that the World reboot has completed its trilogy, any filmmaker could throw their name in the hat if their idea is original enough to pull crowds into the theater. The Jurassic franchise is enormous at the box office, and an R-rating will limit its audience. However, if done right, the movie could be the best entry we've seen thus far.
