Jurassic World: Dominion may have had some of the franchise’s most mixed reviews, but the dinosaur-filled sequel has roared up $900 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2022 so far. As the film heads toward the end of its theatrical run, there could still be enough in the tank to see it pass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to end in second place behind the currently unbeatable Top Gun: Maverick.
While other movies have not opened in China, and despite over a quarter of the country’s cinemas still being closed in the wake of the Covid pandemic, Jurassic World: Dominion has pulled in $150 million from its release there, which has certainly helped it creep up on its competition. The film has also delivered big box office numbers in many international locations, which has bolstered its domestic total, which currently stands at $543 million.
Jurassic World: Dominion has been called out by critics for relying too much on the return of its legacy stars and some impressive prehistoric special effects to get audiences into cinemas. However, that definitely worked. While the film may not have the most detailed plot, there are some gaping holes in the story, and there are some moments that can be seen coming a mile off, but from start to finish, the movie rarely stops for breath. Whether it is a chase through the streets by Raptors or a Giganotosaurus attack, there is plenty to keep Jurassic Park/Jurassic World fans happy.
Jurassic World: Dominion Will Have An Extended Cut
Although the theatrical release of Jurassic World: Dominion came in at a lengthy 147 minutes, the Blu-ray and DVD release is going to be even longer, with around 15 minutes of additional footage being added into the mix. This is said to include the original opening that was released as a teaser last year in IMAX cinemas and took place back in the time of the dinosaurs. This sequence set up a rivalry between the Giganotosaurus and the T-Rex, and also led to a scene of the Jurassic Park Rex tearing through a drive-in movie theater in the current day. This was not used in the theatrical cut, but Colin Trevorrow has hinted that always felt it should have been. In a recent interview, the director also teased what else could appear in a longer cut of the movie. He said:
"There is a scene, and if people have seen the movie, by the time we talk about it, when we're in the amber clave market, the underground market in Malta. There is a scene where our Lystrosaurus, which is the animal that ends up in the fight ring with Chris Pratt sitting next to Kayla has a fight with an Oviraptor. And it's honestly one of my favorite things in the movie, and it's not in the movie. You'll get a chance to see it someday. But it's just one of those kinds of moments that you can kind of tell that it's the 12-year-old who was allowed to make the film, coming forward and doing a sequence. So that one's pretty dope."
