It seems like DC Comic's greatest superhero team won't be filmed in the land down under. The newly re-titled Justice League: Mortal won't be filming in Sydney, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. It seems like the film won't be eligible for Australia's film production rebate.
The Australian government offers a 40% refundable tax offset to films which have a significant enough Australian involvement. However, the director of the equity section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Simon Whipp, claims that Justice League: Mortal is an American story that will be performed with American accents, even though two of its stars (Megan Gale and Teresa Palmer) and its director (George Miller) are Australian.
"For the public, both in Australia and outside of Australia, it will be seen as an American film," Whipp said. "I have tremendous respect for George and his work, which has been some of the most successful films that we have ever produced. But the studio I think in this instance is seeking to push the limits of the envelope."
Miller finds the situation intolerable. "A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking," Miller said. According to Miller, the $200M film now has 90% chance of being shot outside of Australia without the rebate. "If that's going to be the final decision, they're throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs."
The Australian-born director said the industry needed movie franchises, even if they were not identifiably Australian, to boost production, improve skills and draw talent back from overseas.
"New Zealand built up their franchises through Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess into Lord of the Rings," he said. "Now they're doing three Tintin films, two more The Hobbit films and Halo. They've got work for 15 years in that country."
