Back in 2007, years before Warner Bros. and DC Comics had established their superhero cinematic universe, George Miller was set to direct a superhero ensemble entitled Justice League Mortal. Common was officially signed to play the John Stewart version of Green Lantern in that project, but it never came to fruition as it fell apart due to the writers strike. Eight years later, Warner Bros. has already announced a Green Lantern reboot, set for release in 2020, with the character also slated to appear in Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part 2. While doing press for Run All Night, Common revealed to Screen Rant that he would still love to portray Green Lantern after all these years.

"I would love to be John Stewart and play Green Lantern. That was one of those things where I was so excited because we rarely see African-American superheroes or people of color as a superhero. I think it would be great for the world to see, and for people to see, and for Hollywood to put that out there, too. But just for the world to see, just for kids to be able to see, for all nationalities to see a person of color as a superhero, too. Plus, it's just for the fun. Even the pre-production of getting the 'go' and studying Green Lantern. John Stewart is from Detroit, so he was this guy that was really for the community, and I really related to that. He used his powers to help people in the community. I was like, 'Man, I'm going to be John Stewart, the Green Lantern!' Unfortunately, it didn't happen at that time. But maybe the possibility is that it could. I would love to."

In another interview with Hey U Guys, Common also teased that he even got to the point in Justice League: Mortal that he tried on the Green Lantern costume, stating he would love to put it on again.

"I don't know if they're going with the John Stewart character, but if so, I would love to get back into the Green Lantern uniform, because I was excited to do that. I would love it, to be honest. John Stewart is a great character too, and Green Lantern is a great superhero, so I would love to do that."

As you may know, Tyrese Gibson has been campaigning for the John Stewart role lately, but Warner Bros. has yet to make an official decision at this time. Would you rather see Common play John Stewart or Tyrese Gibson? Let us know what you think below, and stay tuned for the latest updates.
