Kate Winslet will replace Nicole Kidman in the lead of the Weinstein Co.'s The Reader, according to Variety. The actress cites her pregnancy as the reason.

Principal photography began late last year in Berlin and the Eastern city of Goerlitz and filming was set to continue this month with Kidman.

The actress had yet to shoot any scenes for the film, an adaptation of Bernhard Schlink's novel about a teen who falls for an enigmatic older woman in postwar Germany.

Kidman's publicist told Australian Associated Press that the actress had to withdraw from The Reader due to her pregnancy. Kidman and husband Keith Urban confirmed Monday that they were expecting a baby.

Ralph Fiennes and up-and-coming German actor David Kross ("Tough Enough") also star in the film.
