Katherine Heigl has stepped in to star in One for the Money, replacing Reese Witherspoon, for Columbia Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment.

According to Variety, One for the Money is based on the Janet Evanovich novel of the same name, which spent 75 consecutive weeks on USA Today's bestseller list.

The book, which features protagonist Stephanie Plum -- an unemployed lingerie buyer who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet -- has spawned a series of 15 novels, all with titles that have a number theme. A 16th Plum novel hits shelves this summer.

Witherspoon was previously attached to take on the role, but the project has been dormant for several years. Heigl's interest has put the project back on the fast track, with Andrea Giannetti overseeing for the studio. Col and Lakeshore will next look to attach a director.

Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith penned the screenplay, and Liz Brixius has been brought onboard to do a polish.

No production date was announced.
