Katherine Waterston has joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming crime drama Inherent Vice.

The film centers on Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), a pothead private investigator that becomes involved with a case about the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend's new love interest. Katherine Waterston will be portraying the investigator's ex-flame Shasta Fay, who is described as a care-free hippie turned housewife.

Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the screenplay based on a novel by author Thomas Pynchon. He will also be directing and producing with JoAnne Sellar, Daniel Lupi and John Lesher.

Katherine Waterston is best known for her work in the New York Theatre scene and had roles in Taking Woodstock, Being Flynn and The Factory.

Production will begin this summer.
