Beloved Hollywood institution Keanu Reeves has revealed that he would love the opportunity to return to one of his many “John” characters, namely John Constantine, in a potential sequel to DC’s 2005 outing, Constantine. The actor, who notes how many times he has indeed played a character named “John”, holds a special place for John Constantine, and hopes that he will be asked to return to the comic book role of the paranormal investigator eventually.

“I love playing Constantine. John Constantine. I’ve played a lot of Johns. How many Johns have I played? I don’t even know. I think it’s over ten. But anyway, I’d love to have the chance to play Constantine again.”

Directed by The Hunger Games and I Am Legend's Francis Lawrence, and written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, Constantine is based on the DC comic Hellblazer and the character John Constantine. The adaptation stars Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, and Gavin Rossdale alongside Reeves as the title character, an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift who must save the planet from evil. Unknown to most people, the world is crowded with spirits both good and evil who walk among us in human guise. One of the few who can see these spirits is John Constantine, but the responsibility of his vision is more than he can stand, and, as a teenager, he attempts to take his own life.

Saved from death, Constantine must now atone for his actions by acting as a guardian in the middle ground between Paradise and Hell, deciding to become a detective of the occult and the paranormal. While the DC outing was not met particularly well by critics (it currently sits at 46% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences were much more favourable, with the new resurgence in popularity found by Reeves in recent years sparking calls for a long-awaited follow-up.

Though nothing regarding Constantine 2 has been officially confirmed, star Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the first movie, has teased the idea of a sequel being floated, making an announcement on social media and posting apparent confirmation of Constantine 2 with the wonderfully direct message, "Sequel In The Works," alongside an image of himself as the fallen Archangel.

While fans await news of Keanu Reeves’ return to the role, the character John Constantine is expected to return courtesy of J.J. Abrams, who is set to bring a live action Justice League Dark series to HBO Max, which includes Constantine, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, Shade, the Changing Man and Zatanna among its founding members.

Reeves meanwhile is plenty busy right now, bringing back one of his most famous “Johns”, John Wick, in the upcoming fourth installment. Before that, the actor will resurrect another of his most iconic roles, though this one is named “Thomas”, in The Matrix Resurrections, which picks up twenty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, and finds Thomas AKA Neo living a seemingly ordinary life inside a new version of the digital reality. The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release next month on December 22, 2021, with John Wick: Chapter 4 due to hit screens on May 27, 2022. This comes to us from Esquire.
