If you're upset that Constantine 2 hasn't happened yet, don't blame Keanu Reeves. The actor is well aware of the fan interest in seeing him reprise the role of John Constantine, and in the past, Reeves has been rather open about his desire to revisit that character as well. Despite years of rumors and false starts, however, Constantine 2 just can't seem to get off the ground.

This hasn't been for a lack of trying on Keanu's part. Recently, the actor appeared on The Tonight Show and briefly touched on the status of Constantine 2 with Stephen Colbert. Reeves says bluntly that he's tried to make the sequel happen, as he's more than happy to play John Constantine once again. The problem is that his efforts alone aren't enough to spark the sequel's production.

"I would love to play John Constantine again from Constantine... I've tried. I've tried, Stephen... Yeah, I would love to."

Colbert jokes that he wants in on the potential sequel in a small role, perhaps as a "reluctant demon" who doesn't want to mess with John Constantine, but it's "his nature." Reeves avoids giving Colbert any promises about making that special appearance happen, but he nevertheless seems excited about the prospect of Constantine 2. The comments are also in line with what Reeves has said in the past about this desire to make the sequel.

"I love playing Constantine. John Constantine. I've played a lot of Johns. How many Johns have I played? I don't even know. I think it's over ten. But anyway, I'd love to have the chance to play Constantine again," Reeves had told Esquire.

Director Francis Lawrence has also said that there have been talks with Reeves about Constantine 2. It would seem that he's run into the same roadblock as Reeves in that making the sequel just isn't up to him. These things are not as easy to make happen as one might think, especially when dealing with intellectual properties where the rights may be tied up with tons of red tape. Even so, given Reeves' popularity and the interest in a sequel, it's odd that Constantine 2 still hasn't happened.

"I think we all wanted to do it," Lawrence told Slash Film. "It was successful enough. We wanted to make a responsible, more R-rated movie. By responsible, I mean we'd make a movie that wouldn't cost quite as much as the original, which we thought was going to be PG-13. We worked on the sequel for a while. It was tricky to come up with where to take it."

He added, "We have been talking about it recently. It's always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realizing there's a real cult following for this movie, it'd be fun to make. Keanu, Akiva, and I have actually talked about it."

Constantine was released in theaters back in 2005. Directed by Francis Lawrence, it was written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello. Along with Reeves, it starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, DJimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare. It is currently streaming on HBO Max.
