Keanu Reeves admits that Speed 3 is a possibility largely due to his return as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. At the end of the original Matrix trilogy, Neo was killed off, and this made it seem impossible that another sequel would ever happen. With Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss both returning as Neo and Trinity in the fourth Matrix movie, it goes to show that anything can happen in Hollywood.

With this in mind, fans of Reeves' earlier work might be hoping that another sequel to Speed could be coming next. Speaking about his work in a new interview with Extra, Reeves touched on how much he's enjoyed working with Sandra Bullock in the past. The actor was asked if he'd be up for reuniting with Bullock in a potential sequel to Speed, and here's what Reeves had to say in response.

"You know, I can't say never. Because I'm standing here for Matrix Resurrections and at the end of the trilogy I did die, so you can't say never."

If we were to go back in time a few years and ask Reeves this same question, perhaps his answer would be different. After all, he did decline returning with Bullock for the previous sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control. While he was obviously up for returning to another franchise role with Bill & Ted Face the Music, coming back as another character long thought to be dead has him now realizing that anything is possible.

Speed, released in 1994, was a very big hit at the time of its release. Directed by Jan de Bont and written by Graham Yost, the 90s action thriller follows Reeves as and Bullock as a SWAT officer and bus passenger who must keep the bus they're on moving at above 50 miles per hour, otherwise the vehicle will explode. It was a hit with viewers and also scored big at the box office, prompting a sequel to quickly go into development.

While Reeves was offered a hefty paycheck to come back for Speed 2: Cruise Control, he was not happy with the screenplay and turned down the sequel. Perhaps he made the right call, as Speed 2 is infamously known as one of the worst sequels of all time. It was also a box office bomb and sits with a miserable 4% score on Rotten Tomatoes as one of the most reviled movies of the 1990s.

With that said, there may still be an interest from fans in seeing Keanu Reeves reuniting with Sandra Bullock for Speed 3. The original movie is still seen as a classic, and a potential pairing of the lead stars in a new feature will add a strong nostalgic value. It would just need to have a plot more solid than Speed but with a cruise ship, but even if we're back with these same characters in another speeding bus, chances are a lot of people would want to see it.

The Matrix Resurrections is now playing in theaters and you can also find it streaming on HBO Max.
