While promoting Kingsman: The Secret Service earlier this year, director Matthew Vaughn revealed that he wants to make a prequel to his 2010 comic book adaptation of Kick-Ass, which would center on Chloe Moretz's beloved character Hit-Girl. The filmmaker recently revealed his plans for the prequel and sequel, explaining that this Hit-Girl movie will show how both Hit-Girl and Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) came to be, which will hopefully generate enough interest to make Kick-Ass 3. Here's what the filmmaker said in a Q&A session with Yahoo! UK.
"We would like to dip our toe back into it, Mark (Millar) and I and the team. We're working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit-Girl and Big Daddy become Hit-Girl and Big Daddy. It's quite a fun idea we've come up with. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn't like Kick-Ass 2 and then we can go off and make Kick-Ass 3. I think we've got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with Kick-Ass."
Kick-Ass wasn't a huge hit at the box office, taking in just $96.1 million worldwide from a $30 million budget, while the 2013 follow-up Kick-Ass 2 only took in $60.7 million worldwide from a $28 million budget. In a separate interview, Mark Millar said that he has only had "informal chats" with Matthew Vaughn about the Hit-Girl prequel and Kick-Ass 3.
"There's really nothing happening here in any official way. Matthew is talking about an idea we had for Hit-Girl but it's just been a few informal chats and we haven't discussed Kick-Ass 3 at all. We're getting Superior together at the moment and Matthew is putting some Kingsman 2 sequel ideas together but Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass are not on our radar I'm afraid."
The original Kick-Ass helped launch the burgeoning careers of both Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character and Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, but it remains unclear if they would be willing to come back for the prequel or sequel projects.
