Kiefer Sutherland can't seem to stay away from high-octane action roles on TV, as having played Jack Bauer for over a decade in 24, he is coming to Paramount+ with a brand new spy thriller streamer has announced is called Rabbit Hole and will be premiering this fall. The series comes from John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, the duo behind NBC hit This Is Us, and Paramount will be hoping for a big hit of their own with Sutherland on board as the lead.

The official synopsis for the show reads: "The series finds private espionage operative James Weir (Sutherland) in the midst of a battle over the preservation of democracy in a world at odds with misinformation, behavioral manipulation, the surveillance state and the interests that control these extraordinary powers."

"From the moment we conceived this paranoid thriller, we immediately thought of Kiefer," Requa and Ficarra wrote in a previous statement. "We're thrilled to partner with him, Paramount+, Charlie and Suzan to bring this show to life."

"Kiefer Sutherland and powerful, heart-pounding dramas go hand in hand," said Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming for Paramount+. "We're thrilled to have him and master storytellers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra at the helm, taking us on a very personal ride to uncover the truth. We look forward to introducing the Paramount+ audience to the service's newest addition as we continue to expand our slate of original tentpole series."

"I've been an admirer of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra's unique body of work for some time, and I'm thrilled to be working on this exciting new project with them and Paramount+," Sutherland said during the reveal. "Reuniting with David Nevins makes it all the more special. I can't wait to see you all with this show in 2022."

Rabbit Hole Will Be Kiefer Sutherland’s First Big TV Role Since Designated Survivor

Although he starred in the 14 short episodes of The Fugitive in 2020, Kiefer Sutherland's last big role on TV was playing the lead in Designated Survivor. While that series saw Sutherland being sworn in as President of the United States after an explosion in the Capitol Building wipes out almost every member of the previous President’s line of succession, and followed his path through a challenging political minefield as he attempts to be seen as a legitimate leader.

Rabbit Hole looks set to balance Designated Survivor’s view of the politics of the world with the action of 24, and that will put Sutherland back in the kind of role that has been one of this best received throughout this career. With the series arriving in around six months’ time, there is not too long for the actor’s fans to wait to see him back in the thick of the action on the small screen. While there had previously been rumors of a revival of 24 coming to Fox in the future, if Rabbit Hole becomes the hit Paramount will be hoping for, it could put that potential return on the back burner for good.
