Australian actor and filmmaker Kieran Darcy-Smith has been set to direct Blackwater for Warner Bros.

Gideon Yago (The Newsroom) is writing the screenplay, based on the true story of Erik Peters' private military company Blackwater Worldwide, which became an important part of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Four former security guards from the firm are currently on trial for a 2007 incident that left 14 Iraqi civilians dead and 18 others wounded. The contractors were working for the U.S. State Department, and they contend that the deadly force they used was necessary.

Jon Peters is producing, after bringing the project to Warner Bros. No production schedule has been released at this time.

Kieran Darcy-Smith made his writing and directing debut with Wish You Were Here, which starred Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer. He has also appeared alongside Joel Edgerton as an actor in the critically-acclaimed crime drama Animal Kingdom.
