We have a little update regarding Kingsman 3 from director Matthew Vaughn. At present, Vaughn is actually busing filming a prequel movie in the franchise titled The Great Game. So, ultimately, if nothing else happens, we will have a four-movie series when all is said and done. As far as the next installment of the main franchise goes, Vaughn says that idea is to wrap up the story between the two leads; Eggsy and Harry.
Matthew Vaughn is currently making the press rounds to promote the Elton John biopic Rocketman, which he serves as a producer on. Taron Egerton, who stars as Eggys in the Kingsman movies, stars as the singer/songwriter. While Egerton won't appear in the upcoming prequel, he is set to return in Kingsman 3, as will Colin Firth and, according to Vaughn, the movie will be all about putting a pin in their relationship. Here's what he had to say about it.
"We've got to finish off the Eggsy and Harry relationship. The final chapter of their relationship needs to be told, which we've got ready to do, and I'm hoping to shoot that later this year or the beginning of next year. But this Kingsman (prequel) has been pushed back to February 14th for coming out, and so, yeah, as soon as that's done, we're looking forward to... It's funny. As Taron was saying, he's looking forward to becoming Eggsy again, because emotionally it's a lot less draining."
This lines up with a previous report that stated Matthew Vaughn would shoot his prequel first in early 2019, then would move right into production on Kingsman 3 before year's end. Things may shift a little bit, but it sounds like that's still, more or less, going to be the plan. Beyond this little nugget, not much is known about the sequel to 2017's The Golden Circle, which introduced the Kingsman's American counterparts, The Statesman.
As far as the Kingsman prequel The Great Game goes, it's said to be a period piece that will actually focus on the early days of the organization back when it was a tailor shop. It will reportedly be less action-packed. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who previously starred in Kick-Ass, will reunite with Matthew Vaughn. The cast also includes Matthew Goode (Watchmen), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Tom Hollander (Bohemian Rhapsody), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Harris Dickinson (Trust), Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam) and Alison Steadman (Orphan Black).
The first two Kingsman movies were produced by 20th Century Fox, which Disney now owns. They see value in the franchise though and are letting Matthew Vaughn proceed as planned. They did shift around the release dates a bit though, as Vaughn noted in his remarks. Kingsman: The Great Game will hit theaters on February 14, 2020. Kingsman 3 remains without a release date.
