The upcoming romance film She Taught Love will star Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Darrell Britt-Gibson, and Taissa Farmiga. According to Deadline, the film is being billed as the love story of this generation. There’s a girl with an expiration date and a guy on a self-destructive path. Besides starring in the film, Britt-Gibson will also make his screenwriting debut.

“Making a film like She Taught Love feels like a revolutionary act, but it shouldn’t. Hollywood loves to turn out stories of Black trauma, but we’re so much more than that. In fact, we are everything. A generational love story, this film is a snapshot of the world as it is, beautifully diverse and bursting with magic. It is a testament to the power and thrill of being young, Black, and in love. With the incredibly talented Nate Edwards at the helm, I couldn’t be more excited about our team’s shared vision for this culturally and commercially urgent film,” said Britt-Gibson.

She Taught Love will be the first feature film from Nate Edwards, who previously made music videos for Tobe Nwigwe, Doja Cat, Summer Walker, and Bryson Tiller. He will be making the film at the behest of Marginal Mediaworks, a startup content studio focused on genre storytelling from underrepresented voices. The company’s work includes film, tv, audio, animation, and new media.

Howell-Baptiste rose to prominence on BBC’s Killing Eve, NBC’s The Good Place, and HBO’s Barry, the latter of which also featured Britt-Gibson. Recently she starred in Queenpins alongside Kristen Bell and appeared in Catwoman: Hunted alongside Elizabeth Gillies. Howell-Baptiste will next be seen in Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Sandman, and Culprits.

Britt-Gibson was in Judas and the Black Messiah alongside Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, and Jesse Plemons. Besides that, he was also in Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy and the HBO limited series We Own This City. Some of Britt-Gibson’s additional credits include Just Mercy, You’re the Worst, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

You might recognize Farmiga from American Horror Story and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. She’s also appeared in The Nun with Bonnie Aarons, They Had with Michael Shannon and Hilary Swank, and the psychological thriller John and the Hole. Right now, she can be seen on HBO’s period piece The Gilded Age.

“Hollywood’s next-gen has arrived. The cultural impact of this team is unparalleled in the market, from buzzy music videos for Doja Cat, to hit HBO series such as Barry, We Own This City, and The Gilded Age, to major studio films like Judas and the Black Messiah, The Nun, and Cruella. While She Taught Love is a generational love story – equal parts Before Sunrise, Poetic Justice, Love & Basketball – in light of the recent years in America, it has also become more urgent than ever. Moral imperative aside, the audience demand and potential revenue left on the table by ignoring Black-led films has now been widely documented. This is a film that centers on Blackness, but isn’t about it. It’s a timely and timeless, contemporary love story,” said the film’s producers in a statement.
