HBO is taking audiences back to Westeros in August with House of the Dragon, a prequel series to the wildly successful fantasy epic Game of Thrones. The network is currently developing a variety of different spin-offs that will take place before the events of Thrones, but a new report is saying one project that's in the works will be set after the final season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Thrones sequel series is in early development, and will be focused on none other than Jon Snow. Kit Harington is set to return to the role which earned him a pair of Emmy nominations, following up on Jon Snow's exile north of The Wall in the Thrones series finale.

Since wrapping on Thrones, Harington joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman in 2021's Eternals. The film's final post-credits scene sets up a future for the character as the Black Knight, and even teases a team-up with Mahershala Ali's Blade. It's unclear when Whitman will resurface in the MCU, though the upcoming Blade film seems likely, but the Daywalker's feature is still in development and without a release date. Until then, Harington seems content returning to the character which made him a household name, continuing the adventures of Jon Snow in new and exciting ways.

Game of Thrones was one of the most successful HBO original series of all time, so it's no surprise that network executives want to go back to the well for future projects. Disney has been able to mine both Marvel and Star Wars to create a number of different spin-off series, which in turn has helped build out its library on Disney+. With HBO now a participant in the streaming wars through HBO Max, adding new series based off a popular series like Thrones is a great way to ensure subscribers stay with the service for the long haul.

In addition to the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel and the Jon Snow sequel, other series that are in the works include 10,000 Ships, 9 Voyages, and Dunk and Egg. All of those projects are at different stages of the development process, but HBO clearly wants to create a continual pipeline of Thrones series for the foreseeable future. A world as big as Westeros provides nearly endless storytelling possibilities, but what's interesting about a Jon Snow series is that it would be after everything that took place in season eight. Folding in some of the characters that are still alive at that time would only add to the excitement of seeing Harington back on-screen as Jon Snow.

As mentioned, the series reportedly isn't very far along in development, so it may be some time before Jon Snow makes his grand return. If audience demand is high for the concept, HBO may elect to fast track the project in order to capitalize on the fervor of continuing the story of Thrones. Until then, House of the Dragon will have to suffice for Thrones fans dying to return to Westeros. House of the Dragon is set to premiere on August 21.
