The Wonder Twins movie has signed on its lead stars. Per The Hollywood Reporter, KJ Apa (Riverdale) and Isabel May (1883) have signed on to star in the live-action film which is currently in development at HBO Max. Adam Sztykiel (Black Adam) is also on board to write and direct the feature with Mary Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing.

KJ Apa is best known as one of the lead stars of The CW series Riverdale, playing a live-action version of comic book character Archie Andrews. He still plays that role with the series just recently renewed for a seventh season. The actor has also appeared in movies like A Dog's Purpose, I Still Believe, and Songbird. Meanwhile, May has earned acclaim for her leading role on the Paramount+ series 1883 and previously starred in Netflix's Alexa & Katie and CBS's Young Sheldon, as well as star in The Daily Wire's film Run Hide Fight.

Warner Bros. will continue to release major DC films in theaters, of course, as we recently saw with the immense success of The Batman. There are separate plans to develop even more movies based on DC Comics characters on the small screen by sending them straight to HBO Max. Another high-profile project in the works for the streamer will be a Batgirl movie starring Leslie Grace as the titular superhero.

The Wonder Twins Are Coming to HBO Max

DC

Though they later went on to appear in comic books from DC Comics, the Wonder Twins were first introduced in the animated series The All-New Super Friends Hour. Twin siblings from another planet, Zan and Jayna are able to activate their superpowers by fist-bumping and uttering the words, "Wonder Twin powers, activate!" Jayna has the ability to transform into animals while Zan can take on various forms of water. If that wasn't zany enough, the siblings are accompanied by a pet monkey named Gleek, who basically serves as their Scooby-Doo

In live-action, a version of the Wonder Twins had been seen in the series Smallville with David Gallagher as Zan and Allison Scagliotti as Jayna. The CW series The Flash also featured an episode where the speedster rescues a couple who happen to have the names of Zay and Jayna, which was loosely based on the characters. Their pet monkey, Gleek, also appeared in the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. Meanwhile, the Wonder Twins have appeared in various animated shows and films, such as Teen Titans Go! and The Lego Batman Movie.

The Wonder Twins were a big part of The Super Friends series at the start, but it was their comic book adaptations that really fleshed out the characters' story. Their biggest hurrah on the printed page came in 2019 when DC issued a Wonder Twins miniseries from writer Mark Russell and artist Stephen Byrne. Garnering acclaim, the limited series was extended to 12 issues from its original plan of six, with the first issues later released as the trade paperback Wonder Twins - Activate with the second half called The Fall & Rise of the Wonder Twins.

Wonder Twins doesn't have an official release date at this time.
