While 2019's Knives Out breakout star Ana De Armas is busy playing Marilyn Monroe in the already controversial fictional biopic Blonde, Knives Out 2 is pressing on with the adventures of the old-fashioned, devil-may-care gentleman detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), but this time in beautiful Greece! In a big departure from the cold, gothic New England setting of the first movie, our favorite old-South sleuth will be alongside the coasts of the beautiful Mediterraneans, solving a mystery that is still unknown to the public.

Detective Benoit Blanc will be joined by an entirely new roster of eccentric and wealthy gold-diggers, sociopaths, and/or crime-committers of great fame and reputation. Here is why we're excited about the forthcoming film and, most especially, why we are so excited to see Benoit Blanc pick up his next sun-soaked, slick and suave case in The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery!

From New England to the Mediterranean Sea

While plot details for The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are still being kept under wraps, it is probably safe to say that the movie will be about metaphorical glass onions rather than actual glass onions.

We know from the first look that it will take pace on the breathtaking Greek shores, both beside and on the Mediterranean Sea, and that there is a boat involved. Perhaps a good old-fashioned "man overboard" situation is afoot? Benoit Blanc will be sporting his finest white linens and will presumably be once again diving headfirst into this new adventure. Such a warm and beachy environment seems so out of place for Blanc, who fits in so well in the first movie's cold and affluent Massachusetts town, so we are excited to see how he functions with his toes in the sand.

The movie comes to us again from writer and director Rian Johnson, but with an entirely different production company and distribution format from the first one. Lionsgate was initially set to produce the sequel just as it did the original, but evidently, Netflix made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be streamed on Netflix with no announced plans for a theatrical release. This was a totally unprecedented deal since the first movie was such a surprise smash hit in theaters back in 2019. Knives Out was also a welcome departure from the more established blockbusters that, in recent years, seem to dominate the silver screens throughout the world.

An All-New Star-Studded Cast

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery cast is wondrously star-studded, featuring many of the most talented names in the business. The movie will include Kathryn Hahn, a prolific Hollywood actress who finally rose to the spotlight after her performance as Agatha in WandaVision, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Outer Banks), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks, Stranger Things), Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Nine Perfect Strangers), Janelle Monáe (We the People, Hidden Figures, Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections, Blade Runner: Black Lotu), Leslie Odom Jr. (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Hamilton), Edward Norton (Fight Club, The French Dispatch), and Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone, Moon Knight).

Onions have layers, as we all know by now, so The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will most likely be the kind of multi-layered mystery that only the master craftsman Rian Johnson can cook up. It is certain to be a mystery that at first makes no sense, then compels us before moving the audience forward to a shocking and original conclusion.

Something that is important to point out is that despite the first Knives Out film, the audience knows very little about Benoit Blanc himself. He submerges himself into the world of his cases, and any details about him are never revealed. Does he have a family? How did he become a detective? Will the sequel answer these inquiries for us? We have so many questions about him! It is not likely that he is hiding any sort of dark past. His cheery and open demeanor indicates that he has all of his affairs in order and is completely free and eager to devote all his attention and energy to the crisis at hand and its most favorable resolution.

When Can We Watch Knives Out 2?

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival between September and October, but it is not yet known when the public will be able to behold this delightful mystery on Netflix. While we will miss the throne of knives, we can't wait to see what Rian Johnson has cooked up for us this time when the movie premieres later this year!
