Knives Out 2 Is completely scrambling people’s brains by revealing a new and unexpected title and a release window. Announced in a new video, the sequel to the Daniel Craig hit will now be called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and will arrive on Netflix during the holiday season. While plenty expected the movie to have the simple title of a general sequel, it seems that Rian Johnson had a different idea for the franchise, as he explained in a post on Twitter.

“When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc – to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being…and (ta dah) title.”

Of course, the “Christie” referenced in Johnson’s announcement is Agatha Christie, arguably the queen of the crime mystery and author of numerous books featuring the detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, among others. For anyone who has seen Knives Out, the influences of Christie’s work are easy to see, and it looks like Johnson is more than happy to lean into that influence again for the sequel. In the short video that accompanied the title reveal, the movie was also given a release window for its Netflix debut, which is simply stated as “the holiday season,” putting its arrival around late November or December 2022.

As well as revealing the movie's title, Rian Johnson also went into a little more detail about his love of Agatha Christie’s work and how it inspired how the Knives Out series could develop in the future. In talking more about the British author’s work, Johnson gave a hint that future installments in the franchise may not be simple mysteries either. He added:

“It wasn’t just the settings or the murder method, shw was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues. Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true.”

While Glass Onion appears to be another mystery whodunit on the surface, based on Johnson’s comments, it is likely that fans will find a few surprises to come when the film makes its debut this Christmas. Netflix obviously had a lot of faith in Johnson’s vision for the future of the Knives Out franchise, reportedly playing double what was being offered by Lionsgate to snag the movies. Some of those joining Daniel Craig for another mystery include Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Ethan Hawke and Kate Hudson. Filming took place on location in Greece, meaning we can expect to see a Mediterranean murder ensue in the movie, and it hopefully won’t be too long before we get a full trailer for the film.
