Following comments by Frozen’s Idina Menzel about possible progress on Frozen 3, co-star Kristen Bell has added to speculation that the third movie in the franchise could be in development now. Bell has provided the voice of Anna in all Frozen projects since the original movie premiered in 2013, starring opposite Menzel as the voice of Elsa. After capturing the hearts of a generation, and delivering a few songs that stand among the greatest Disney has ever produced in their movies, Frozen has grown to branch out and includes TV shorts and a Broadway musical. Now, everyone wants to know if, or more likely when, we will get to see a new movie.

During a recent interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Bell made a surprising announcement that Frozen 3 was on the cards. However, this statement did come with the small caveat that she has zero authority to reveal or agree to such things, but it is still the closest we are going to get until an official Disney announcement. Bell told Fallon:

"I would like to officially announce, with zero authority, Frozen 3.

I know Idina recently said she would do it. And I feel like if we're all in, what are we waiting for?"

There is certainly a lot to consider before putting out a third Frozen movie. While pulling in the voice actors, which along with Bell and Menzel also includes Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff, is clearly not going to be a problem, the biggest mountains to climb are the previous movies themselves. Having set a standard so high, Disney will not want to put out a movie that fails to capture everything that the first two movies delivered, and that could be a tall order.

While true of every sequel, Frozen 3 needs a storyline that expands on the previous movies in a way that feels new and fresh but not forced. That is a task that will fall to Frozen’s writers Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck. Last year, when being asked about a threequel, star Josh Gad discussed the possibility of a new movie, and noted that there had to be a good enough reason to continue, and he hoped that Lee and Buck had something that would bring about Frozen 3.

Frozen II ended with a lot of changes having happened to the characters, with Anna now taking over the role of Queen of Arendelle, and Elsa taking on her role as guardian of the magical spirits of the forest. What kind of threat could be posed to the sisters to bring them back together to stand side by side again is something that will determine the ability of the movie to once again connect emotionally with audiences.

It took six years for Frozen II to hit cinemas, and considering the time lost for the entertainment industry during the Covid pandemic’s shutdown, there could still be a few years to wait before we see Elsa and Anna reunited again on the big screen.
