Joaquin Phoenix's Joker has found his Harley Quinn, as Lady Gaga is now confirmed to co-star in the upcoming sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. With Todd Phillips back in the director's chair, the movie serves as a follow-up to the hit 2019 film, but the sequel comes with a twist. While the original was a psychological thriller without much music, Joker: Folie à Deux will be a straight-up musical, giving Gaga a chance to show off her singing skills as the popular supervillain.

This news has many of Gaga's fans feeling thrilled. As one fan puts it on Twitter, "Joker 2 being a musical with Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn is actually genius. This movie is gonna crush, really looking forward to it!"

Another excited fan tweeted, "This is going to be awesome all I’m gonna say I’m excited it’s gonna be a musical mixed with drama and thriller who knows what’s gonna happen in this movie also Lady gaga as Harley Quinn all I gotta say is hell yes!"

"Gaga as Harley Quinn makes perfect sense," says someone else. "She can sing, act, dance & is overall a good performer. She’s going to do amazing!"

"I didn’t realize how much I needed Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in my life," one tweet reads.

And another fan surmises, "The way people are going to flock to Joker 2 because of Lady Gaga. Such a smart move to cast her as Harley Quinn. She solidified herself as a butts-in-seats movie star after House of Gucci."

The tone of the Joker sequel will be quite different compared to the original movie, given that it's a musical, but director Todd Phillips has previously said that he'd only make a sequel if it had a "thematic resonance" reminiscent of the first film. Back in 2019, when Phillips was still mulling over whether he'd really move forward with part two, he told the Los Angeles Times what his tentative plans were for the sequel.

"It couldn't just be this wild and crazy movie about the Clown Prince of Crime," Phillips said. "It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that [the original] does. Because I think that's ultimately why the movie connected, it's what's going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting."

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on Oct. 4, 2024. You can see more of the fan reactions to Lady Gaga's casting as Harley Quinn below.
