Lance Bass and Danielle Fishel are revisiting their '90s high school romance for an upcoming prom flick.
The pair revealed that they were working on a movie about their short-lived love story and prom experience in a recent episode of Fishel's Pod Meets World podcast, which she hosts alongside former Boy Meets World co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong. According to Fishel, Good Girls' Lauren Lapkus and Happiest Season's Mary Holland are writing the script.
The two dated for about a year during Fishel's senior year of high school after they met when the actress interviewed *NSYNC for ABC. The couple attended Fishel's prom together, an event that both say was monumental for their relationship.
"Lance and I had a very wonderful, very warm, loving relationship but it was completely lacking of intimacy—intimacy in the romantic sense...it turns out I'm not Lance's type," she joked, recounting how the expectation of getting a hotel night proved to be too much for Bass. "I had a vision for what [prom] night was going to be, and Lance was very nervous about what my vision for that night was going to be."
"That is the night Lance talks about...where he felt like he was hurting me by not being honest with himself or anyone else about what was going on in his life. And so it was kind of the impetus for him to say, 'I'm going to end our relationship.'"
Bass Says Prom, Relationship with Fishel Helped Him Discover His Identity
Bass, who came out publicly as gay in 2006 and now shares 10-month-old twins with husband Michael Turchin, credits his high school romance with the Boy Meets World actress for helping him discover his identity.
"The reason we wanted to make this prom story into a film, I think so many can relate to that story," he said. "Where I think so many people in the LGBT community, their prom night was the night they're like 'Oh, wait a minute. This can't happen anymore. I can't do this anymore.'""This was the catalyst for me that made me start to accept myself, which took a long time after that, but it was definitely the first little straw that broke," he said.
The couple broke up only two weeks later, with Bass citing distance as the reason. The former *NSYNC star came out to Fishel in 2000, and the two have since remained good friends.
