Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may not have delivered the multiverse adventure that some hoped for, but it did bring a version of the Illuminati to the MCU, which included the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Anson Mount as Black Bolt as well as John Krasinski making a fan-cast dream come true as Reed Richards, Hayley Atwell’s live-action debut as Captain Carter, and Lashana Lynch as Earth-838’s Captain Marvel. Lynch recently opened up about her surprise return to the MCU while speaking with Variety. She said:

“It was amazing. Kevin Feige told me a long time ago, way before the world knew what was happening with her, which was sad because I really enjoyed Captain Marvel and working with Brie and everyone. But that nice to have this moment for us, actually, for the culture; that was a twist and turn that we never expected. And we were watching ‘WandaVision’ really happy that we get to see Monica’s backstory, but then this twist, these twists that Marvel puts on us without warning, my heart was like, “The world’s not gonna know what to do with themselves after this.” It was fantastic.”

Of course, the return for Lynch was short-lived; like the rest of the Illuminati, her Captain Marvel was easily dispatched by Scarlet Witch in her pursuit of America Chavez. However, with The Marvel’s coming next year, there could always be the potential for Lynch to reprise her role as Maria Rambeau in a flashback scene, especially as her daughter Monica and the real Captain Marvel feature in the movie.

Is Maria Rambeau Returning in The Marvels?

The Marvels will bring Captain Marvel back to the MCU following her brief appearance in the post-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and teams her up with WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan for an all new cosmic adventure. The movie filmed its principal photography in London towards the end of last year, and around the same time, photos appeared online of Lynch having a meal with Monica Rambeau actress Teyonah Parris and The Marvels’ director Nia DaCosta.

There is a theory that no one is ever permanently gone from the MCU, as has been proven recently with unexpected returns of the likes of Idris Elba’s Heimdall in Thor: Love and Thunder. Despite Maria Rambeau having died in the MCU’s timeline, there is plenty of potential for her to be included in flashbacks featuring her daughter Monica, or her former colleague Carol Danvers.

Of course, there are very few details known about The Marvels other than its lead trio of heroines, and its likely connection to the events that will transpire in the Secret Invasion Disney+ series. With the film having been pushed back to Summer 2023, it is still going to be a while before we see a trailer for The Marvels, but fans will hope to hear a little more about the film during this week’s D23 Expo.

The Marvels hits theaters on July 28, 2023.
