5 of the deleted scenes from Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi have been revealed, and a few of them offer up some interesting details about Finn and Captain Phasma. In a recent interview, Johnson stated that he loved all of the deleted scenes from the movie and maintains that they were not cut because they were bad. Instead, he insists that they had to be cut in order to make The Last Jedi better as a whole. Some of the deleted scenes detailed are important, while a few of the others are a bit on the fun side.
A new report details 5 out of the 14 deleted scenes that will be included on The Last Jedi Blu-ray edition that comes out at the end of this month. The first scene in question is Luke's Third Lesson, which has been talked about before. In the scene, Luke tells Rey that a warring tribe is raiding the Caretaker village, thinking that Rey will not help. When she rushes over, she discovers a party. It had been previously reported that this scene was the third and final lesson for Rey on Ahch-To, but Rian Johnson states that it is not. He had this to say.
"Originally it was just a breaking point for her. Okay, he's gone too far. This is the point where she finally says, Okay, if you're not gonna help, then I've wasted too much time here."
The Third Lesson was not directly addressed, leaving fans to speculate about it, according to Rian Johnson. The next scene includes Finn and his Stormtrooper friend, but is mostly focused on DJ, Rose, and Finn on board Snoke's ship. There's an awkward moment in an elevator where Finn is recognized by an old Stormtrooper friend, who may or may not be Tom Hardy (his part got cut out of The Last Jedi). The Stormtrooper does not realize that Finn has defected and instead believes that he received a promotion. Johnson explains.
"The implication from the exchange is that this was obviously an embarrassment that this happened with Finn, and that First Order didn't let the info get out, as much as they could. The tension is broken by the fact that he doesn't really know the story of what happened with Finn."
In the next deleted scene from The Last Jedi, Captain Phasma is outed as a traitor by Finn. As it turns out, the fight between Phasma and Finn was supposed to be longer and include more of a group effort from Phasma's army. During one part of the scene, Finn is trapped and tells the Stormtroopers that Phasma is the true traitor after giving up the shield codes for Starkiller Base at the end of The Force Awakens. Phasma then shoots all of the Stormtroopers and continues her battle with Finn. Rian Johnson said that the scene was cut because the scene as a whole needed to be more condensed. He said.
"I really like the little moment of Phasma being caught and getting called out by John, and that little game of chess that they have. But we needed a much more condensed version of that scene."
The fourth deleted scene from The Last Jedi shows Luke Skywalker and Leia simultaneously mourning the loss of Han Solo. After Luke learns the news of Han's passing, he retreats to his stone hut where his eyes start to water. Leia is seen at the same time in a similar pose on the Raddus, looking out the window. And the final scene exposes BB-8 as being somewhat of a peeping Tom. BB-8 provides Finn with a hologram of Rey giving him a tearful goodbye while he's unconscious, which persuades him to stay. Out of the 5 deleted scenes, only three of them seem like they would have fit in the movie. We'll just have to wait and see about the others when The Last Jedi Blu-ray comes out on March 27th. Until then, you can check out what Rian Johnson had to say about 5 of the deleted scenes at Entertainment Weekly.
