The latest trailer for Prey further teases the return of the Predator. Due for release on Hulu next month, the newly released teaser offers another look at the Predator’s first foray on Earth, as he attempts to hunt the members of the Comanche Nation in 1719. Unfortunately for the alien hunter, he did not plan to come across Amber Midthunder’s warrior woman.

From 20th Century Studios, Prey is the latest outing in the long-running Predator franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (The Boys, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, and tells the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people.

The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

The new teaser trailer boasts some incredibly exciting shots from the Predator prequel-that-is-not-a-prequel. Most striking of which is surely the wide-eyed Naru staring in terror as an invisible monster lifts a fully grown bear above its head. Despite the invisibility, the Predator clearly intends to let its presence be known as the trophy hunter tears through all manner of adversaries in the hopes of achieving its prize.

Prey Could Lead to Even More Predator Movies Set During Different Time Periods

Prey director Dan Trachtenberg has revealed his hopes that, with the latest Predator outing making a bold move in setting the movie in the distant past, that this could lead to similar adventures for the iconic movie monster. “There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise,” Trachtenberg said recently. “The things that most excite me are the boldest swings and I think there's scope to do other things that haven't been done before.”

Dropping the Predator in the 1700s is certainly a change of pace, and should Prey be a success, it could very well lead to Disney allowing Trachtenberg to return and continue to reinvigorate the beloved franchise. The Predator versus Vikings or 1930s gangsters, anyone?

Written by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan, Treadstone), Prey stars Amber Midthunder (Legion) as Naru, the young Comanche warrior who must fight to protect her tribe against a Predator. Starring alongside Midthunder are Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.

Prey is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5, 2022. It is the first Predator installment since the Disney/20th Century Studios merger. Thankfully the presence of the House of Mouse has not affected the Predator’s modus operandi, with Prey rated R thanks to its "strong bloody violence,” and director Dan Trachtenberg assuring fans that "The Disney thing did not affect the movie at all in terms of its content."
