Fans of the 2009 vigilante movie Law Abiding Citizen will be pleased to learn that a sequel is reportedly in the works. Producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer are coming back to the intellectual property they helped create over a decade ago. Additionally, Gerard Butler, along with his G-base partner Alan Siegel are returning as producers.

Story details are currently being kept under wraps. The original featured Butler and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles and was directed by F. Gary Gray. The motion picture centered around assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter.

Law Abiding Citizen was a massive success on Netflix. The movie became one of the top three most viewed films on the streaming service in December. The project shared the honor with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable. Unlike the other two projects, Law Abiding Citizen was not created with Netflix's involvement.

Rob Paris and Mike Witherill of Rivulet Films are producing the sequel, as well as Foster and Wimmer. Tristen Tuckfield and Jillian Apfelbaum of Village Roadshow Pictures will be the executive producers of the title.

There are no full plot details released, and no cast members officially announced, but the sequel is set to surprise people. Foster explained, “I am delighted to partner with Rob, Mike and Village Roadshow Pictures, together with my frequent creative partner Kurt Wimmer, to revisit these great characters and this compelling topic which seems even more relevant today than when we made the original film. We’re going to blow your mind… again.”

Paris and Witherill talked about the market for quality action thrillers when they discussed, “The demand for smart, star-driven action thrillers in the marketplace is palpable, and this is one of those rare unexploited franchise opportunities that was too good to pass up.”

Tuckfield and Apfelbaum said, “We’re thrilled to partner with Rivulet on the sequel to Law Abiding Citizen. It’s a title that exemplifies the scope and breadth of the Vine library. Collaborating closely with Kurt and Lucas will lend the creative authenticity necessary to make a film worthy of its predecessor.”

In addition to the Law Abiding Citizen sequel, Foster and Wimmer also worked together on 2002's sci-fi action movie Equilibrium and a reboot of Stephen King's horror story Children of the Corn. Wimmer has written multiple films, including 2012’s Total Recall for Columbia Pictures, 2015’s Point Break for Alcon/Warner Bros., Salt for Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Thomas Crowne Affair for United Artists/MGM. He recently wrote the script for an upcoming action movie called The Beekeeper.

A release date has not yet been set for the sequel to Law Abiding Citizen.
