The Vicious Kind director Lee Toland Krieger has signed on to direct the R-rated indie teen comedy The Spectacular Now, which is an adaptation of Tim Tharp's coming-of-age novel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Spectacular Now centers on a high school senior who lives only for the moment. As a project, he begins to date a social outcast, a girl trying to plan for the future, but begins to realize he has the power to permanently impact someone's life.

The Spectacular Now was initially billed as a reunion of the creative team behind (500) Days of Summer when it was set up at Fox Searchlight, with Marc Webb attached to direct and Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber writing the script.

But Marc Webb moved on to direct the relaunch of Untitled Spider-Man Reboot at Columbia, and the project was put into turnaround by Searchlight.

No production date has been set.
