Legacies has come to an end. Over the past several days, there has been essentially a massacre of television shows with a slew of cancelations getting announced. The CW in particular pulled the plug on many shows, like Batwoman, Naomi, Charmed, and more. You can now add Legacies to that list as well, as Variety reports that the Vampire Diaries spinoff has officially been canceled after four seasons.
With no new plans to develop further spinoffs set in the world of The Vampire Diaries, the cancelation of Legacies puts a cap on the bloodsucking franchise. The parent series launched in 2009 and had a very successful run before wrapping up on The CW in 2017 after eight seasons. The first spinoff, The Originals, ran from 2013 to 2018 with a five-season run of its own. From there, Legacies was spawned, but it appears that it will have the shortest run of the three shows when it airs its series finale on the network in June.
Legacies follows Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), the daughter of Klaus and Hayley Marshall. She has special abilities as someone with vampire, werewolf, and witch bloodlines in her family. Hope attends the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted to better understand her powers, while characters and storylines from the previous series make appearances or are referenced. The series also starred Aria Shahghasemi, Kaylee Bryant, Jenny Boyd, Quincy Fouse, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, and Omono Okojie.
Legacies' Creator Is In Mourning
Julie Plec, who created The Vampire Diaries, Originals, and Legacies, has reacted to the mass cancelations going on at The CW. Plec did not specifically name Legacies but posted a tweet reacting to so many shows getting put out to pasture by the network. She makes the comparison to the infamous "Red Wedding" from Game of Thrones which saw a slew of major characters getting killed off. Legacies was just one of many "victims" and it's going to take Plec some time to put together all of her thoughts about it, but she's grateful for the fans showing support.
"It’s the Red Wedding at WBTV/CW today," Plec said. "Much more to say, but not today. Loads of gratitude coming for fans and cast and crew in future tweets. But today, we mourn."
If even Plec was shocked by the news of Legacies getting canceled, it would appear that the cast and crew did not see it coming. This may mean that the series could be ending on a cliffhanger, or will at least be leaving some storylines unresolved. There is always a chance that the franchise could have new life breathed into it in the future at some point, possibly with another spinoff series, which could help bring some new answers. There are no plans for that at this time, however, officially putting The Vampire Diaries on ice. At least for now.
The series finale of Legacies will air on The CW in June.
