Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is the Cinderella story at this year's cinema, going onto be the biggest movie of 2014 when no one thought that was possible. So far, director James Gunn's sci-fi adventure has brought in more than $300 million domestically. And now other studios want to follow suite, with many hurrying to green light their own space operas. It seems that DC and Warner Bros. have their own galaxy traipsing title that they want to bring to the big screen, and are in the process of developing their own superhero variant Legion of Superheroes, which will compete with Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to Latino Review's El Mayimbe, the studio has secretly begun the process of sending out the DC comic book Legion of Superheroes to screenwriters in order to get a baseline to launch the project into fruition. They will have a number of writers take their run at the title, and then they will pick which idea they like best.

Could the project be one of the numerous unannounced DC films Warner Bros. is planning? For now, nothing is confirmed by the studio has they sit on 9 release dates.

In case you are not familiar with the superhero team, Legion of Superheroes is a 30th Century inter-galactic team of super-powered young adults. Inspired by the legend of Superboy, they were founded by Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl under the funding of an eccentric millionaire they had saved named R.J. Brande. This cast expands to include dozens of members with a diverse array of powers and personalities. There have been several versions of the team in main continuity because of the constantly changing nature of the future, including the Reboot Legion and the Prime Legion.

Cosmic Boy (aka Rokk Krinn) has the power of super-magnetism, and he can manipulate, repel or attract metal objects of varying sizes. Saturn Girl (aka Imra Ardeen) has the power to summon distant people. Like Professor X, she can probe any mind, be it human, electronic, or animal mind. She also has the power to "push" weak minds, and sometimes controls others' thoughts and emotions. And Lightning Lad (aka Garth Ranzz) has the power of electricity , and is able to shoot out "lightning bolts" from his body.

Legion of Superheroes were created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, first appearing in Adventure Comics #247. Mark Waid, Tom McCraw and Stuart Immonen engineered a reboot of the team following Zero Hour in Legion of Super-Heroes. There was another reboot of the team by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson, starting in Teen Titans/Legion Special #1. The team even goes up again often rumored villain Darkseid in The Great Darkness Saga, which if utilized could tie this title into Warner Bros. and DC's planned Justice League franchise.
