Fans of The Lego Movie won't get the straight-up sequel The Lego Movie 2 until sometime in 2018, but they will get to explore more of this universe in two upcoming spin-offs, Ninjago in 2016 and The LEGO Batman Movie in 2017. The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are serving as producers on these spin-offs, with the filmmakers teasing new details in an interview with Empire.

We reported last month that Will Arnett will reprise his voice role as Batman from this year's The Lego Movie for The LEGO Batman Movie, which will be directed by Chris McKay. When asked about this LEGO superhero spin-off, Chris Miller revealed they plan on honoring every film and TV version of Batman.

"Rest assured that every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged. There have been so many interpretations of Batman and there is so much to play with there. There are 40 versions of his origin story alone."

When asked about the spin-offs in general, Phil Lord revealed that they are all set in the same universe as The Lego Movie.

"The thing is about these movies is that each of them have their own tone and their own voice. We're doing this Ninjago one with Charlie Bean, we're working on the Batman one, and each one of them feels like its own movie, but obviously they all exist in the universe that the LEGO movie existed in, and so finding that balance has been part of the trick."

Chris Miller compared their approach to a reversed version of Marvel's The Avengers.

"It's like we started with The Avengers and now we're going to spin off and explore the different worlds, then come back."
