Universal Pictures has acquired the spec screenplay Leonardo from writer Jonny Kurzman for producers Lawrence Gordon and Charles Gordon.

The story centers on a young Leonardo da Vinci, who tries to use his numerous talents to prevent Renaissance Europe from slipping back into the Dark Ages. Aside from painting the world-famous Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci was a writer, mathematician, sculptor, scientist, and inventor, who developed early designs for the helicopter, calculator, tank, and solar power.

It isn't clear when production may begin on Leonardo. We reported last month that Starz gave the green light for Da Vinci's Demons from writer David S. Goyer. This new TV series will also follow the exploits of a young Leonardo da Vinci, and how he begins to invent the future.
