Lethal Weapon has officially gotten too old for this s*** and is heading into retirement. Fox has decided to cancel the series after three seasons and won't be bringing back Murtaugh and Cole for another go-around. This move, though disappointing for those who have stuck with the show through its various ups and downs, was highly expected, given the production troubles that have been going on behind the scenes for the last two seasons.

Networks have been making decisions regarding their 2019/2020 season plans and that's meant a lot of shows have been getting the ax. Lethal Weapon season 3 concluded in February and the season finale will now serve as the series finale, as Fox decided to not move forward with the one-hour series, which is based on the movie franchise of the same name. Though, the series is not actually connected to that same universe as none of the actors from the movies returned to reprise their respective roles on the small screen. Instead, it was Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, the role made famous by Danny Glover. But the role of his partner has been subject to change.

Originally, Clayne Crawford was on board as Martin Riggs, the character originally played by Mel Gibson in the movies. Fans of the show liked Crawford quite a bit. However, there was a great deal of drama behind the scenes, as he clashed with Damon Wayans. Not only that, but other on-set drama led to Crawford ultimately being fired from the series. That paved the way for former American Pie franchise star Sean William Scott to come on board as a new character named Wesley Cole. Scott then assumed the part of Murtaugh's partner for season 3.

Lethal Weapon started life as a movie released in 1987. Directed by Richard Donner, it was a huge success and went on to spawn three sequels, with the most recent entry, Lethal Weapon 4, arriving in 1997. There has been much talk of a possible fifth entry in the franchise, which would bring back both Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. That hasn't materialized though. Perhaps Warner Bros. will turn their attention to the movie now that the show has officially been retired? For those who may be hoping, it's highly unlikely another network or streaming service would step in to save the series, as has happened with other shows in the past, given the troubles. Damon Wayans previously indicated he was going to leave, one way or the other, following season 3.

The cast for the series also included Keesha Sharp, Kevin Rahm, Jordana Brewster, Johnathan Fernandez, Dante Brown, Chandler Kinney and Michelle Mitchenor. Fox also canceled a pair of other shows, The Passage and comedy The Cool Kids, after just a single season. The network has renewed shows such as Empire, 9-1-1, The Resident and Last Man Standing. Animated shows such as Family Guy, Bob's Burgers and The Simpsons will also be returning for additional seasons. This news was previously reported by Variety.
