After hosting Jeopardy! didn’t quite work out, LeVar Burton has lined up a job hosting another game show. The Reading Rainbow host and Star Trek: The Next Generation star has just signed on to host a new TV game show based on the popular home game Trivial Pursuit}, produced by game maker Hasbro and Entertainment One. The show has not yet secured a network or streaming service to call home, but it’s expected to sell quickly with Burton attached.

In a statement, President of Global Unscripted Television at eOne Tara Long said, “LeVar Burton has been an iconic member of American pop culture for decades from Roots to Reading Rainbow to Star Trek and beyond. His love for intellectual curiosity paired with his ability to connect with audiences worldwide make him the perfect partner to bring Hasbro’s beloved trivia game to households in a new and exciting way.”

Trivial Pursuit is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe. I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television,” Burton added. The actor is also on board to executive produce the Trivial Pursuit show under his LeVar Burton Entertainment banner. eOne’s Tara Long and Geno McDermott are also executive producing with LeVar Burton Entertainment’s Sangita Patel as well as Hasbro.

This news follows what can be ultimately seen as a failed experiment hosting Jeopardy! earlier this year. After a great fan demand for Burton to have a try guest hosting the show, he was given a limited batch of episodes, but ultimately didn’t get the job. That situation in itself turned out to be a fiasco, with executive producer Mike Richards naming himself as the new host only to get shown the door soon after when his past was brought to light.

Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings have since come on board to serve as the guest hosts of Jeopardy! until a permanent replacement for Richards can be named. Bialik has made it clear she hopes to host the show full time, and while there are many fans loving her in the spot, no decisions have been made about a new permanent host. Some of Burton’s fans were hoping he’d have another guest hosting spot, as he’d previously described the job as an opportunity he’d been waiting his whole life for.

After all of that went down, LeVar Burton said he realized that hosting Jeopardy! wasn’t the dream job he thought it would be. He even teased that he was looking for another possible game show to host, which we now know has turned out to be Trivial Pursuit. As Burton explained on The Daily Show:

"The thing is, I never thought about hosting any other game show outside of Jeopardy!. But now, they went in a different direction with their show, which is their right, and now I'm thinking, well it does kind of make sense [to host another game show]. So, let's see what I can do. We're trying to figure out what the right game show for LeVar Burton would be."

We’re expecting an update on this project in the near future as it secures a home. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
