Marvel’s Loki concluded last summer but left the fans reeling in the aftermath of its shocking finale that introduced the MCU’s next big bad and broke the multiverse. Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as the titular God of Mischief, who begins a journey towards redemption after being arrested by the TVA (Time Variance Authority) for crimes against the "sacred timeline." Loki received immense critical acclaim upon release, with many fans declaring it to be Marvel’s best television series.

With the way Loki ended, a second season was inevitable and was renewed the same day its final episode aired on Disney+. It was soon revealed that Kate Herron, who directed all six episodes of season 1, wouldn’t be returning and that the studio was looking for new directors. Marvel has finally brought over Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead to helm Loki season 2. The duo has also directed two episodes of the upcoming Moon Knight.

Benson and Moorhead began their filmmaking careers with low-budget sci-fi horror films like Resolution and The Endless before moving on to more commercial entities like Netflix’s Synchronic and the recent, Archive 81. The pair are the latest in a long line of low-budget horror filmmakers who went on to helm mega-blockbusters like James Gunn, James Wan, Adam Wingard, Sam Raimi, and Peter Jackson.

As per Deadline, Benson and Moorhead’s early work was the reason Marvel hired them to make Moon Knight, and they impressed the studio so much that Marvel immediately started scouting projects to involve them in. Unfortunately, Loki creator Michael Waldron is not returning. He recently wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and is also developing Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie. Eric Martin, who served as staff writer on Loki season 1 and Starz’s drama Heels, will be taking over from Waldron as head writer. Waldron will still executive produce Loki season 2 along with Tom Hiddleston.

Loki Season 2 Will Begin Filming This Summer

The sophomore season of Loki will see Tom Hiddleston navigate his way through the multiverse after he was left stranded in an unfamiliar universe where Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror rules the TVA. The cliffhanger ending paved the way for the variants of the time-traveling villain to wreak havoc on the world(s).

It's been seven months since Loki concluded, and it’ll be at least a year before fans get to see their favorite anti-hero in action again. Although, Hiddleston is rumored to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The second season of Loki is expected to begin filming this June, but so far, only Tom Hiddleston has been confirmed to return. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Owen Wilson, who played Ravonna Renslayer and Mobius M. Mobius, have verbally confirmed their returns. Wilson recently answered the Internet’s question in a video for Wired. "Is Owen Wilson coming back to Loki? Um... yes. He is coming back to Loki, and I think we're going to begin filming that pretty soon. I had a great time working on Loki. I really enjoyed Tom Hiddleston and all the people on that [show],"

Wunmi Mosaku, Jonathan Majors, and Sophia Di Martino, who played the female variant of Loki, Sylvie, are all expected to return. Loki is Marvel’s only TV show yet that has been renewed for a second season, and with much of the original team moving on to other projects, the show really has an uphill task ahead. But judging by Marvel’s track record and with Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead behind the camera, a change in the creative team may turn out to be in favor of Loki season 2.
