Loki demonstrated the continuation of Marvel Studios’ original series, which they have been distributing on Disney+. The first season of the series was hugely popular and provided a vessel for the Marvel universe to expand even further than it exists already. Loki stars Tom Hiddleston in the main role, and broke streaming records in the first three weeks on the platform.

Loki is presented differently than we have previously seen in the MCU. In this version, Loki is brought to the TVA (Time Variance Authority), an organization that exists outside of space and time. He is given a choice to be erased from existence or help fix the timeline for the good of humanity. The show received strong reactions from critics and fans and was quickly renewed for a second series. Here’s a look at everything we know so far about season 2.

How Season 1 Ended

The ending of the first series saw He Who Remains present Sylvie and Loki with a choice regarding the sacred timeline which has been referenced throughout the series. In order to keep this timeline in place, He Who Remains had to select and kill variants such as Loki and Sylvie who set upon their own path of free will. He tells them they can become members of the sacred timeline themselves, or they can kill him, ultimately allowing a multiverse war to begin. Sylvie quickly decides to kill him and brings on the multiverse war.

The Cast: Who's Returning?

Loki Episode 1.2 Recap: The Hunt Across Timelines Is On

At the end of season 1, we were greeted with a message which clearly stated that Loki will return for a season 2, so we can be sure that Tom Hiddleston will be reprising his role as Loki even though this has not been officially announced by Disney. Other major cast members from last series who will most likely return include Owen Wilson's Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Ravonna Renslayer, and Wunmi Mosaku's Hunter B-15.

Season 1 was directed by Kate Herron, who has already confirmed that she will not be returning to direct the second season. She did confirm that Sophia Di Martino's Sylvie will be returning for the next season, and that we can expect her story to develop even further. A lot of familiar faces will likely return for next series, and we can be sure to expect some new faces to show up too.

Plot: What Could Season 2 Be About?

The first season's finale gave us a more in-depth understanding of He Who Remains, and we see a huge change for Loki and Sylvie and the possible direction of their characters. Loki has been transported to an alternate reality, and none of the characters from the series know where he is. It’s highly likely that Loki will attempt to escape from this reality and have feelings of unease there, which will likely serve as a plot driver for the second series.

We also see Sylvie with a loss of purpose after she has killed He Who Remains and destroyed the TVA, and this will likely be explored in the second season. It’s already been confirmed that Sylvie’s character will be developed further for season 2, so we are excited to see how this develops. There’s also a lot of stories from season one that can be picked up and developed, and it will be interesting to see how this is done.

Anticipated Release Date

Loki-and-Sylvie-in-Loki

As of right now, no official release date has been confirmed by Disney, and with plenty still to come in the MCU, it’s likely that a release could line up with another MCU release. It’s very unlikely that a release date will be scheduled for 2022. Shooting is scheduled to begin in summer this year, so the turnaround for editing in order to achieve a release date this year would not be likely. The release dates of upcoming films in the MCU is still up in the air, and it could be very likely that Marvel would want to release Loki season 2 in line with these or shortly afterwards in order to maximize narrative continuity.
