Alert the Council of Elrond! For the first time in history, Stephen Colbert has been stumped by a Lord of the Rings question. And it came courtesy of actor Ryan Gosling. Gosling joined Russell Crowe on a recent episode of The Late Show to promote his new P.I. comedy The Nice Guys. Only, the actor came packing a secret weapon in his back pocket. We have the full video below to prove this monumental moment truly happened.

As any fan of Stephen Colbert knows, he is an aficionado of all things Middle-Earth. The man is a Shire wizard of knowledge. He even appeared in one of The Hobbit movies! Ahead of Battle of the Five Armies, Colbert graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly dressed as a variety of characters, including Gandalf, Legolas, and Bilbo. And it was the talk show host's vast understanding of J.R.R. Tolkien's works that truly captured the heart of Ryan Gosling's mom.

As Gosling tells it, his mother has been a big fan of Stephen Colbert for years. But that wasn't always the case. She did not originally like his brand of political satire. But when she saw him compete against James Franco in a Lord of the Rings trivia contest, and take it home, the man won her heart.

It was actually Ryan Gosling's mom that wrote the Lord of the Rings trivia question that finally stumped Colbert. She instructed her son to take it to him, and destroy him! Stephen nervously crossed himself before attempting to answer the question. This is what Ryan Gosling asks of the master.

"In The Fellowship of the Ring, Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings, full title, Gandalf is trying to find the dwarf doors of Moria, and an archway appears on the rockface. Do you remember that? My question is: the archway appears on... what page?"

And there you have it. The question that finally killed off the master! Stephen Colbert was unable to answer this very hard question. All he could do was hang his head, spin in his chair, and try to launch off the sting of defeat. Triumphant in his quest to bring Colbert to his knees, Gosling jumped up and high fives his Nice Guys co-star Russell Crowe. Now, Ryan Gosling stands as the only person to every publicly stump Colbert on Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trivia. You can watch the entire incident play out in the video below. But be warned, it's not pretty.
