According to The Digital Bits, Lionsgate's DVD release of the Andrew Niccol arms dealing movie, Lord of War was meant to be “released with anamorphic widescreen video” at the aspect ratio of 1.78:1.

The interesting thing is that when the movie came out theatrically it was in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. After contacting Lionsgate, The Digital Bits was informed that the choice of aspect ratio was in fact chosen by “the film's production company.” The site also stated that it was not clear whether the director was part of the decision to release the movie in this way.
